The Santa Rosa plum, a favorite among home gardeners and farmers' markets, was introduced in 1906 by renowned horticulturalist Luther Burbank in Santa Rosa, California. Known for its sweet, slightly tart flavor and deep purple-red color, this variety typically starts bearing fruit sooner than other plums. While commercial production is rare, it remains highly prized for its taste and versatility.
This Japanese plum variety also makes a beautiful ornamental tree, featuring showy, pinkish-white blossoms in the spring. A single tree can produce an abundance of fruit, which home gardeners and homesteaders can enjoy fresh, cooked, or preserved by canning, making jam, or dehydrating into prunes.
The skin of the Santa Rosa plum is thin, and its yellow flesh clings tightly to the pit. Rich in fiber and high in vitamins A, C, and K, this plum is also packed with antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, due to its dark red coloring.
To grow Santa Rosa plum trees, provide them with full sun and ensure they receive 500 chill hours in the winter to encourage healthy fruit production.
USDA Zone 5-9
Prefers full sun, grows to be 20-25ft tall and 15-20ft wide
